National news covers events and issues with a wide scope that affects the whole country. This includes politics, economy and major disasters. In contrast, local news focuses on stories that are relevant to a particular community or region. This can include city governance, crime reports and human interest stories.

There are several major news channels that broadcast nationally, including Fox News, CNN and MSNBC. They also feature a variety of news programs that focus on current events and analyze political trends and opinions. They are available through most cable and satellite providers.

In addition to these major channels, there are a number of specialty news networks that broadcast national news. These include AccuWeather Network (which broadcasts pre-recorded national and regional weather forecasts and news coverage), Fox Business Network (which launched in 2007 and is owned by News Corporation) and Cheddar, which began in 2017 and is distributed by Altice USA.

i24NEWS, which was established in 2022 and is owned by Altice USA, claims to amplify voices “on the front lines of social, economic and environmental justice.” It offers daily news programs and independent documentaries with a progressive slant. It also simulcasts the Democracy Now! program, which is hosted by longtime progressive radio host Amy Goodman. The channel is available on many national satellite and cable providers as well as through a paywalled Internet stream. It is sometimes referred to as the fourth major national news channel in the United States.
