Local news is an important part of a healthy democratic society. It helps to connect communities, promote accountability and transparency, provide essential information, and support local businesses. Yet the economics of local journalism have been challenging and many local media outlets have been forced to make difficult choices about their editorial priorities and how to meet community needs.

Local journalism can be found in a variety of formats, from print newspapers and television stations to online communities, neighborhood websites, and mobile apps. A 2024 Pew Research Center survey found that a majority of Americans get their local news at least sometimes from one or more of these sources. While views of local news are less polarized than opinions of the national media, there are significant differences in how people perceive the quality of their local news.

Most Americans say they trust their local news sources and that the people behind these news organizations do a good job of getting the facts right. But the public also recognizes that local media face major financial challenges and are struggling to keep up with technology changes.

Americans who are very attached to their community are more likely than others to say they at least occasionally get news about a broad range of topics, including crime, government and politics, the economy, traffic and transportation, schools and children’s issues, and arts and culture. However, fewer than half of those who get local news about any topic report being extremely or very satisfied with the coverage they see.
